The Questia service is set up differently from other educational software in that each student has his or her own account. The individual user's account is personalized, saving books/articles read, bibliographies created, margin notes written, and other work. All high school subscription sales include complimentary teacher accounts, training CD's, and in-person teacher training.
Some highlights of Questia:
- Over
67,000 books and
1.5 million journal, magazine, and newspaper articles in the Humanities and Social Sciences;
- Publications from over 240 well-known academic and commercial publishers, such as Oxford University Press, Greenwood Press, Perseus Books LLC, and W.W. Norton.
- All the pages in all the books and articles are fully searchable and printable; There is no limit on how many people can use the same publication at the same time;
- The collection includes both older classics and newer works -- the books range from the 19th to 21st centuries;
- Users can highlight, bookmark, and make notes in the publications, and save their markups in their personal workspace;
- Users can create citations and bibliographies in standard styles (MLA, APA, Turabian, Chicago, and ASA);
- Users can access Questia from any computer with an Internet connection and supported operating system and web broswer -- they do not need special software.
Many teachers have found the ability to use Questia to create reading lists using multiple chapters from multiple books a tremendous time-saver and much more cost-effective than purchasing new textbooks. Using Questia's bibliography tool, you can create a reading list and e-mail it to your students. The students then click on each title, which is hyperlinked to Questia, and open the exact book or article specified. Every student can have simultaneous access to every book on the reading list from any Internet connection, whether at school or at home. This allows for flexibility in teaching that was not possible when students only worked with physical books. And soon teachers will be able to use our forthcomming Teacher's Corner to help facilitate the integration of technology into the classroom.
