HOUSTON (May 2, 2005) – Questia Media, Inc., the world’s largest online academic library and research service, has partnered with Transaction Publishers by licensing nearly 1,000 books related to international social science. Nearly 700 of these titles are new to the Questia collection while the others had been previously licensed to Questia by Aldine de Gruyter, Inc., which Transaction acquired in July 2004.
“As Questia continues to expand, we are pleased to offer these new titles. Over the past six months we have added more than 6,300 new volumes of full-text books and nearly 623,000 articles to our exceptional library,” said Troy Williams, president and CEO of Questia.
Transaction joins more than 250 other top commercial publishers and university presses, including Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Perseus Books Group, Taylor & Francis, Greenwood Publishing Group, Princeton University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, and Columbia University Press, among others, who have licensed their content to the Questia library.
Questia’s innovative business model, which is based on individual subscriptions, provides a new revenue stream for publishers, as well as a new channel of distribution. Through Questia, publishers also can benefit from backlisted and out-of-print titles by licensing them for online use. In addition, publishers’ intellectual property is protected from digital copyright violations since Questia’s content is not available for download or off-line viewing and the books are displayed one page at a time, maintaining the original pagination.
“The partnership with Questia allows us to further our company goal of enhancing public, professional, and scholarly awareness by reaching the widest possible audience,” said Irving Louis Horowitz, chairman of the board and editorial director of Transaction Publishers. “In addition, Questia provides us with a new revenue stream for our content. Their individual subscription model for online research has created a new and distinct market opportunity for publishers.”
About TransactionTransaction Publishers is widely acknowledged as a major independent publisher of social scientific books, periodicals and serials. Transaction's mission is scholarly and professional inquiry into the nature of society. Transaction offers publications in older, established disciplines such as economics, political science, history, sociology, anthropology and psychology, as well as recently established disciplines ranging from area research to urban studies, policy analysis, philosophy of social science, organizational behavior and criminology. Its list now includes the Aldine imprint, which enhances Transaction’s presence in social science and in biological anthropology. It regularly rescues important books in all of these fields from oblivion, and reissues them in new editions with forewords by leading scholars.
Located on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey, Transaction has strong ties to the traditional mission of American university life as a center of learning, and to applied needs of public and private institutions in social research. Through its many publications, Transaction promotes mutually beneficial exchanges between academic and professional life.About Questia
