Summer School? No Sweat!

Questia Provides Tool to Cope with Shorter Semesters
HOUSTON, TX (June 12, 2001) -- It's finally summertime, and students nationwide are kicking back, soaking up some rays and hanging out with friends unless they're in summer school.

While some college students will spend the summer months catching up on movies they missed during finals week, working to make some extra cash, or lounging by the pool, 33 percent, or one-third of students, will get ahead of the game by repacking their backpacks and returning to the classroom for abbreviated summer sessions. Questia, the online library with powerful search and writing tools, provides the following tips to survive summer school without breaking a sweat.

1. Staying organized is key. A shorter session doesn't mean less work. Treat it like a full-length semester. Be prepared for class and get there on time.

2. Procrastination -- don't even think about it! Summer sessions typically pack a semester's worth of information into a shorter schedule. If you fall behind one day, you'll lose the equivalent of a week and find yourself living a summer school nightmare!

3. Get in sync with your professor, and take advantage of the smaller class. When your professor has fewer students to keep track of, it's more likely that you'll become a favorite. You can definitely benefit from the one-on-one attention, and kissing up never hurt anyone's GPA!

4. Have a summer fling - with a study buddy. Find a friend to compare notes with, so you're sure to have all the material for the tests and assignments. Plus, studying with a friend is a lot more fun than flying solo. You never know where pizza, books, studying and the summer heat will take you!

5. Save your money for important things, like a new bikini or concert tickets, and buy and sell your textbooks at a half-price bookstore. Since you'll only be using them for a matter of weeks, it's unnecessary to pay normal prices for brand-new textbooks. Also, reselling them at the end of the session will give you some extra cash.

6. Slacking off on reading assignments is not an option! Getting your class reading done early will allow more free time for poolside perusing of your favorite magazines.

7. Vacation now, pay later! Don't schedule any summer vacations during the summer session. Because of the shorter semester, a week on the beach will cause you to miss a large chunk of the class. It's just not worth it!

8. If you are working this summer, plan ahead. Schedule your work hours around class time, so you can keep both commitments. It is physically impossible to be in two places at once!

9. Don't stay out until dawn on a school night. The sun stays out later during the summer months, and so will you. Eight a.m. classes come a lot earlier when you're sleepy, so force yourself into an early bedtime on school nights. Save your partying for the weekends.

10. In addition to these time- and grade-savers, log on to Questia.com. If you run out of daylight and the library closes, no sweat. This online library provides more than 40,000 books and journal articles at your fingertips, allowing you to do extensive research without ever leaving home. Say no to late-night trips to the library, and say yes to better papers, faster. By following these tips, as well as taking advantage of the extensive resources that Questia offers, you can ace any class, leaving plenty of free time to work on your tan. Who knew that spending the summer in the classroom could be such a breeze?
