Patriotism, Leadership, and Religion Lead in September "Best Read eBooks" List
HOUSTON (October 3, 2002) - In keeping with the tenor of the times and current events, patriotism, leadership, and religion emerge as the three dominant reading themes in the September list of Best Read eBooks published by Questia Media and available at www.Top20eBooks.com.
American history classes commencing with fall academic calendars and the one-year anniversary of September 11th are likely to be heavy influencers of the number of patriotic books that are on the list (two on the Top 20 Best Read eBooks list and six within the Top 35). Students enrolled in American history courses are deep into researching the roots of the U.S. government, democracy, and related documents such as The Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America. This nationalistic reading trend can also be seen on other reading lists such as The New York Times Best-Seller list where 11 out of the top 15 hardcover non-fiction best-sellers are about September 11th, the American government or U.S. history.
Leadership in government, business, and religion is a prevailing theme in media headlines across the country and the world and, not surprisingly, is reflected in some of the best read titles on the September Best Read eBooks list. Given current world events and political instability in many parts of the world, people are expectantly looking to their government leaders for guidance and policy setting. On the corporate front, leadership or lack thereof from the business sector has been scrutinized, criticized, and lambasted since the start of the corporate scandals in late 2001. Leadership from religious leaders has also been top of mind with the escalating situation in the Middle East as well as the sexual abuse scandals surrounding the Catholic Church.
Books on religion, particularly Eastern faiths such as Buddhism and Hinduism, as well as witchcraft again prove popular this month. All three religions are repeats from the August Top 20 Best Read eBooks list.
The list of Top 20 Best Read eBooks provides a snapshot of the most active titles and subjects on Questia, the world's largest online library of books and journal articles, and is compiled from data on the aggregate reading patterns of users of the Questia service. Ranking is based primarily on page views (each time one person looks at a page results in one "page view") and the overall number of unique users who accessed that title. Secondarily, book length is factored in to correct for the fact that shorter books, even if read in their entirety, would have fewer page views. The October Top 20 Best Read eBooks will be published on November 5, 2002 at www.Top20eBooks.com.
The Questia service offers subscribers unlimited simultaneous access to every title within the 70,000-title Questia collection, enabling all users to read any book or journal article regardless of how many other users are reading the same book or journal article. In addition, Questia offers research tools to help organize, highlight, cite, and store a user's work on their personalized virtual bookshelf in the Questia library.
