Rebhun (anthropology, Yale U.) provides a clear and thoughtful description of the impact of rapid social and economic change on courtship, marriage, cohabitation, and infidelity, and their accompanying emotions, based on fieldwork conducted in Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brazil from December 1988 to December 1990. The first part focuses on issues related to emotion and economy in general; the second focuses on the special characteristics of romantic passion.
