A MANUFACTURER of enzymes used in the food production industry is aiming to double its turnover over the next two years as it continues to power into the North Ameri-can market. If you buy your orange juice ready-squeezed it is likely you have benefited from the expertise of Pontypridd-based Biocatalysts. The hi-tech company produces the natural enzyme which drinks manufacturers use to remove the skin from oranges or other citrus fruits, before they are pressed and the juice extracted.
Its enzyme is injected just under the surface of the fruit and quickly works to loosen the skin, meaning no laborious manual labour is required.
Biocatalysts, which enjoys an annual turnover of pounds 2.5m after seeing 18% year-on-year growth, also makes natural enzymes for a wealth of other foods such as bread, cheese, beer and wine. In essence, they are simply used to help speed up the manufacturing process - acting as a catalyst, as the company's name suggests. Biocatalysts now supplies 140 food manufacturers, including many blue-chip names. Exporting 85% of its production to countries as diverse as South Africa and Brazil, its main markets are the US and Canada, which currently account for one third of its business.
Biocatalysts is confident that its business in North America will continue to grow until it represents more than half of its trade.
Aiming to see its turnover reach pounds 5m by 2005, the company's continuing export success was recently recognised by a Queen's Award.
