A scaled-back plan for a mixed-use, four-story building for downtown Glen Ellyn failed to win a consensus from village trustees Monday night.
Trustees voiced objections about the development's lack of parking and limited public support.
The development, which would be called Glen Ellyn Square, would be located at the Main Street parking lot between Duane Street and Hillside Avenue.
No formal vote was taken.
Trustees, however, gave the developers one more chance to add more parking.
Dave Sanders, president of the St. Louis-based developer HPD Cambridge, said he's "not sure" if a newer plan will be presented. "We've got to have a chance to figure it out," he said.
Trustees agree the parking lot needs to be improved, but didn't believe Glen Ellyn Square was the best option. "If we make a mistake, it's a devastating mistake," said Trustee Mary Jane Chapman.
The ground level of the four-story building would have a restaurant and retail space with the top three floors reserved for senior apartments. Last month, HPD eliminated 13 units for a new total of 53.
The building will still be four stories tall, but the top-floor units would be set back from the building front so from Main Street looking west, the building will appear to be three stories in height. …
