ITV weather presenter Laura Greene, 25, toyed with the idea of becoming an aerobics instructor before going into television like her sister Sarah, 37, the former Blue Peter star.

The daughter of DIY expert Harry Greene, who works for the Shopping Channel, and actress Marjie Lawrence, she lives in South-West London.

THE WORST thing that happened to me at my public school, Bedales in Hampshire, was glandular fever. Yet, in a way, it was also the best because it taught me to re-educate my lifestyle and I'm healthier now than I have ever been.

They call it the kissing disease but that is an old-fashioned view. My boyfriend at the time never had it and I believe people are prone to it when they're rundown, so his immune system was probably better than mine.

Either way it coincided with my 17th birthday and I couldn't understand why I was so tired.

A GP diagnosed flu but then my mum's homeopathic doctor said he thought it was glandular fever, and blood tests confirmed his suspicions.

However, thanks to alternative medicine and a change of diet - cutting out dairy products, caffeine, sugar and refined foods - I recovered within eight weeks and everything has changed for the better since.

Before I never gave a thought to diet, exercise or sleep. You don't when you're 16 or 17. But now they are the key features in my regime.

My mother was into alternative medicine long before it became popular and would cart me off to the homeopathic pharmacy or hospital when necessary. To this day, I rarely use a GP but often turn to homeopathy, supplemented by acupuncture for my hay fever.

May and June are my worst months and I have the classic symptoms: runny nose, itchy eyes, sore throat, sneezing. I've had it since childhood and it's getting a little better now so I might finally be growing out of it.

However, it's not helped by the fact that my nasal system is very small and my nose becomes easily blocked.

Given the choice, my favourite weather is crisp Alpine sunshine and blue skies. In the August heatwave I was relieved to be at work because our building on the South Bank is air-conditioned and so cool. …
