- Air Force Airman Michael Gonzalez, son of Dulce Cabrera of Des Plaines, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Gonzalez is a 1999 graduate of Maine South High School in Park Ridge.

- Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Felicidad I. Witherspoon, daughter of Mansueto D. and Taciana I. Dugaduga of Des Plaines, has been recalled to active duty to support the missions of Operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom.

Witherspoon is a personnel services specialist assigned to the 847th Personnel Service Battalion, Fort Sheridan. She has 16 years of military service.

Noble Eagle is the official name given to the U.S. military operations associated with the homeland defense and support of federal, state, and local civil agencies in the United States. U.S. military reserve component members have been activated to help guard, protect and defend America from within, including the borders, shores and skies.

Operation Enduring Freedom is the official name given to anti- terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners. Reserve component members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces have been mobilized, activated and deployed along with active duty members to support the war against global terrorism. U.S. troops serve in South Asia, the Arabian peninsula, islands in the Pacific, and in numerous other countries.

- Army Pfc. Jesse A. Zanko, son of Coreen Zanko of Des Plaines, has graduated from the U.S. Army Ranger School at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., with authorization to wear the distinctive Ranger Tab. A graduate of the Ranger course is the epitome of the U.S. infantryman.

Zanko has four years of military service and is a gunner assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning. He is a 2001 graduate of Maine West High School. …
