JOHN DALY'S glorious quest to make the field for next month's U.S.

Masters gathered pace yesterday at the scene of one of his most humiliating failures.

Daly, of course, is no stranger to extremes, but even by his standards the 18 he ran up on the sixth hole at the 1998 Bay Hill Invitational took some believing.

In yesterday's second round the 38-year-old American improved on that score by 14 shots during a round of 70 that left him well placed to fulfil his Augusta ambition.

Daly needs to remain in the top 10 of this year's U.S. Tour money list at the end of next week's Players' Championship to claim an invite, …
