WE find the proposal of the opposition for President Gloria to step down or to go on leave totally without any legal basis.
All the petitioners have to do is look at candidates Ping Lacson, Loren Legarda and Kabayan Noli de Castro. All of them are senators running and for a different offices at that. And yet, nobody is asking them to resign or to go on leave.
We have a unique situation. For the first time since EDSA 1, we have an incumbent President who is running for office. This was not anticipated by the framers of the 1987 Constitution. So there is no law covering this situation except the law of common sense.
If the senators, and other national officials, who are running for a different public office are allowed by law to stay in their respective positions, it is only logical that this same benefit should be extended to an incumbent president.
President Gloria is therefore not distracted by this nuisance suit or any other suits which the opposition is cooking up.
President Gloria remains focused on what she needs to do as President and that is to deliver to the average Filipinos what they need a good education for their children, easy access to affordable health care, good roads, clean water and clean government.
