Makers of Newcastle United-based film Goal! are behind the most sexually-explicit British film ever made.
Director Michael Winterbottom defended Nine Songs when it was given its first screening at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film features Goal! star Kieran O'Brien and American student Margo Stilley having real sex.
The film has not yet been given a certificate, although Winterbottom conceded he could leave some of the more explicit material on the cutting room floor.
The director, currently shooting the first instalment of the football-themed Goal! film, said: "I'd been thinking for a while about the fact that most cinematic love stories miss out on the physical relationship, and if it's indicated at all everyone knows it's fake.
"Books deal explicitly with sex, as they do with any other subject. Cinema has been extremely conservative and prudish.
"I wanted to go to the opposite extreme and show a relationship only through sex. Part of …
