Martha Schuchart Sachs, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and longtime community volunteer in the D.C. area, died at her Arlington home on July 31 of renal failure. She was 90.

Born on a farm outside Union, Mo., she was raised on a dairy farm near Morehouse, Mo. She graduated in 1932 from Morehouse High School as class valedictorian.

Mrs. Sachs graduated from Cape Girardeau Teacher's College in Cape Girardeau, Mo. She taught for 10 years in various Missouri schools before volunteering for the Army at the outset of World War II.

While stationed in Japan after the war, she volunteered to teach English to Japanese …
