Aspiring Playwrights Get Chance at Metropolis

The Metropolis Performing Arts Center in Arlington Heights is putting out the call to Midwest authors for the second annual New Play Festival.

Playwrights from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin are invited to submit one-act plays that have not been produced and are no more than 45 minutes long.

Four winning plays will be selected and each will receive up to 12 hours of rehearsal time with actors and a director.

Then, this January, Metropolis will present concert readings of the four plays. One new play will be showcased each Sunday, at 1 p.m. Jan. 2, Jan. 9, Jan. 16 and Jan. 23.

Tim Rater, executive director of the not-for-profit theater, said Metropolis officials want to supplement future seasons with new works, plus give playwrights an opportunity to hear their plays read aloud and get feedback from others.

Million Week fund-raiser for American Cancer Society: To coincide with today's Ladies Day at Arlington Park, a Women in Racing luncheon will be held in the elite Turf Club to highlight contributions of women to horse racing.

This is the second year Arlington has hosted the luncheon that is also a fund-raiser for the Riding for the Cure program of the American Cancer Society. The Riding for the Cure program was created by Arlington Park commentator Christine Gabriel, a cancer survivor. …
