A new document that outlines how much physical education instruction Duval County public school students should receive will be discussed during a public hearing at the School Board meeting tonight.
There is little written about the amount of physical education schools should provide, said Judy Hitzing, who oversees physical education programs in Duval County schools. The new document tries to formalize the school system's policies, as required by the Legislature this year.
All Florida public school systems are required to submit their written physical education policies to the state Department of Education by Dec. 15.
"We never had a district-written policy about how many times per week [students should attend physical education] or who teaches it, whether they need to be certified or not," Hitzing said.
