* Howard Schomer, a former Chicago Theological Seminary president who was active in human rights, ecumenical and mission work for some 50 years, died June 28 at age 86 in Oakland, California. Ordained a Congregational minister in 1941, he was a conscientious objector during World War II, serving with Quakers in domestic camps and hospitals. With his wife, Elsie, he established an ecumenical retreat in 1947 in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, France, and aided postwar relief work until 1955. (His body will be interred in that French city.)
