Actually it's the Apple Math & Science Curriculum Integration Guide on CD-ROM, and it's designed as an interactive reference tool for educators who are looking for Macintosh-based math and science software.
The guide includes information on 27 software packages for math and science, and because it is stored on a CDROM it is able to offer a number of features that are not available in print-based guides. For example, using Apple's new QuickTime multimedia system software extension for the Macintosh, the guide offers more than 60 video clips, including vignettes of educators commenting on their experiences with the various software programs.
The guide also takes advantage of the extensive storage capacity that CD-ROM provides to include demonstration copies of the software packages right in the guide. This "try before you buy" feature is important to many educators who want to deterrmne for themselves how well a particular package supports their educational philosophy and teaching practices.
Since the CD-ROM includes QuickTime video and audio, it won't work with just any Macintosh. At a minimum it requires a color Macintosh system that supports QuickTime, has at least four megabytes o fRAM, and HyperCard 2.1 and System6.0.7 (or higher) running MultiFinder. It also requires a CD-ROM drive, of course, which in the short term may tum out to be the biggest obstacle for some schools to overcome.
Kenyon Scott, Apple's manager of Math and Science Market Development, says that the company plans to produce a series of CD-ROM-based curriculum guides for K-12 education. The math and science guide, which is available now, can be obtained by contacting your local Apple Education Sales Consultant.
