A MAIN car park in Coventry city centre could be put out of action for nine months once work gets under way on the pounds 100million Belgrade Plaza scheme.
Urgent talks are taking place on how to address the potential shortfall in parking spaces during the summer and beyond as it emerged the work was likely to have wider implications for the nearby Leigh Mills multistorey car park than originally envisaged.
The car park is to be extended by a further two floors to help serve the new development, which includes a casino, two hotels, restaurants and bars and 357 flats.
Tony Auty, head of development projects for the city council, said it had been hoped the two lower floors of the car park could remain open while extension work continued overhead.
But health and safety officers have expressed unease about this arrangement and it now looks likely the car park will completely close when work on the first phase of the scheme gets under way in July, and not reopen until April, 2006. …
