One of the key goals in the Public Library Association's strategic plan is for public libraries to be recognized as the destination for a wide variety of valuable services and for their funding to be a community priority. To meet that goal, PLA has embarked on a public library advocacy campaign that builds on ALA's Campaign for America's Libraries and features the message "The Smartest Card: Get It. Use It. @ your library" (AL, Aug., p. 7).
The messages of the campaign, which officially launched in September to coincide with National Library Card Sign-Up Month, are that a library card will be the most valued and used card in every wallet, funders and community leaders will value and support America's public libraries, and all library staff will understand the value of the campaign and be enthusiastic supporters.
The division has developed a full menu of resources, available at www.pla.org, to support this message, including a campaign toolkit containing a calendar, downloadable art, talking points, and other tools; and campaign news in English and Spanish. "Smartest Card" posters, bookmarks, and pencils are also available from the ALA Online Store at www.alastore.ala.org.
