Board congratulates Gionna

TARLAC CITY The sanggu-nian panlalawigan of Tarlac has passed a resolution congratulating Ms. Gionna Jimenez Cabrera for winning the Bb Pilipinas-Universe 2005 title. Calling Ms. Cabrera "a combination of beauty and brains," Vice Gov. Marcelino "Bogs" Aganon said her victory in the recent beauty pageant "brought pride and honor to the Province of Tarlac." He noted that her father, Rod Cabrera, former administrator of the National Electrification Administration, is a native of Camiling, Tarlac. Aganon said the whole province is "extending our best wishes for her success in the Miss Universe beauty pageant" to be held in Bangkok, Thailand on May 31.The vice governor called on his provincemates and all Filipinos as well to vote for Gionna in the Internet poll being conducted by the Miss Universe organizers. "Just log on to msuniverse poll2005@yahoo.com and vote for our countrys bet," he said.

Man gets 40 years for murder

CEBU CITY The Regional Trial Court (RTC) found a suspect guilty in connection with a shooting incident and sentenced him to a 40-year imprisonment for the crime of murder. RTC Branch 24 presiding Judge Olegario Sarmiento sentenced to jail Valentin Hintapan and ordered him to pay R100,000 in civil indemnity and moral damages and R37,000 in actual damages. In resolving the case against Hintapan, Sarmiento gave weight to the testimony of witness Rolando Mabano who testified that he saw Hintapan pull the trigger and shoot Florderlino Gabutero at dawn of Sept. 14, 1997. …
