COLLEGE OF St. Benilde won the mens title while Southwestern University claimed its third straight womens crown as the 9th Nestea Beach Volley came to a fitting end yesterday at the Hey Jude Resorts sandcourt here.
Southwesterns Florian Gutierrez and Marites Natad, the same tandem who emerged champions last year, flexed just enough muscles to beat University of Mindanao Tagums Liezl Manatad and Mylin Que, 21-13, 21-16.
The victory, fashioned out before a star-studded crowd that actually cheered for both teams, once again reaffirmed Southwesterns dominance of the annual event where no other school has won three titles in a row.
St. Benildes Arnold Laniog and Janley Patrona, meanwhile, proved too hot to handle for USJ-R, which was favored to win a second straight title with the tried and tested team of Joseph Alguno and Jonrey "Air" Sasing.
Laniog and Patrona took control right from the start and ran away with a 21-14, 21-14 victory in just a little over 30 minutes. Most of the time, they caught their rivals flatfooted and frustrated.
"Basta ibinigay lang namin ang lahat then reward na lang ang panalo," said Patrona, adding that this could be his last beach volley tournament. …
