Parents to Learn about Teaching; Don Brewer Is Having Math and Literacy Night

A new elementary school in Arlington has scored high marks since its opening in 2002 by stressing fundamentals.

In fact, the third- through fifth-grade Don Brewer Elementary, 3385 Hartsfield Road, has scored an A on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test two years in a row.

"The standards movement in Duval has made and continues to make a big difference in what our students learn and retain," said Principal Annetta Kornblum. "It's definitely made a big difference in what they know vs. what they don't know."

She said the school embraces an early learning philosophy with an emphasis on mathematics and literacy.

In fact, the school is hosting a Math and Literacy Night at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Math and Literacy Night is a way to include parents in the learning process by teaching parents methods they can use to assist their students, Kornblum said.

"Many parents today just aren't aware of the high level of reasoning skills required of their children," she said. "Plus, it's just critical for parents to stay involved with their child's education."

The program begins with a dinner from Longhorn Steakhouse, Regency Square location, which parents can purchase as a benefit to the school. …
