HEAD teacher Brendan Higgins has welcomed plans by Catholic church leaders to create a city academy in Rugby.

The move would mean there would still be a Catholic secondary school in Rugby - the present one, Bishop Wulstan Catholic School, is currently under threat of closure.

Bosses at the Catholic Diocesan Schools Commission want to be the main sponsor of an academy serving 930, three to 16-year-old pupils.

Part of the school would be in a new building on a site in the west of Rugby and part would be on the site of English Martyrs Catholic Primary School in High Street, Hillmorton.
