JOHN PRESCOTT yesterday cleared his diary for the weekend to try to salvage his marriage.
He cancelled his constituency surgery tomorrow to spend more time with wife Pauline.
Mr Prescott has admitted his wife of 44 years was devastated by his two year affair.
The couple are due to stay at their home in Hull this weekend surrounded by close family.
A close friend of Pauline's described her as the "kindest, sweetest, most gentle person".
She said: "In her heart Pauline probably knew this kind of thing was possible because there are women who set their sights on other people's husbands, particularly when you throw in the aphrodisiac of power.
"She will feel absolute disdain and contempt for this woman and perhaps, knowing her, some pity.
"How could this woman think this affair could ever replace more than 40 years of marriage? This family unit is so much stronger than any affair."
The friend said Pauline would not allow herself to be a victim of her husband's betrayal.
She added: "She will hate the intrusion of this because she is an intensely private woman. …
