WHEN pulling out the odd grey hair suddenly becomes a daily obsession, most women reach for the bottle of dye - and often carry on right into old age.
But with a sprinkling of stunning older female celebrities now proudly flaunting their silver locks, it could be time to stand up and say "we're grey and we're proud".
Grey has never been so glam in Hollywood. Meryl Streep is sporting a stylish snowy-white bob in her role as ice-queen magazine editor Miranda Priestley in the film The Devil Wears Prada.
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis has been wearing her grey hair in a pixie crop for the past few years, while British star Judi Dench keeps her short style steel-coloured.
Why we're whiter
GREY hair is actually colourless - the hair runs out of pigment with age and air bubbles form in the hair shaft, changing the way the light reflects on it. The grey colour is the result of the combination of the original darker hair with the colourless hair.
That's why blondes tend to end up with white hair, while those with brown hair will look a darker grey. Dark-haired people often notice greys earlier, but this may simply be because they stand out more.
EXPERTS SAY: The age at which you go grey is largely down to genes, so if one of your parents went grey young, the chances are you will too. People often think they are only grey at the temples but that's probably just where they notice it first.
Be glad to be grey
IT could be time to break the dye habit - grey can be more flattering than harsh colour jobs.
As you get older, your complexion changes and greying is nature's way of adjusting your hair colour to suit you. The luminosity of grey is very flattering around the face, rather like going blonde.
Think of all the money you'll save not going to the salon, not to mention the time that would have been spent sitting in a colourist's chair for three hours every four weeks.
EXPERTS SAY: The secret behind looking silver and sensational is a great cut. Meryl Streep, Jamie Lee Curtis and Judi Dench all have short styles with lots of texture and movement. Leave it longer and it can make you look older, but a short, statement style can look fresh and modern with grey hair. It's a difficult look to pull off, so go to the best hairdresser you can afford. …
