Societies in the Spotlight; Art

Article excerpt

ARTISTS from four local art societies are showcasing work at The Herbert in Coventry.

The works are by the Coventry & Warwickshire Society of Artists, the Coventry Art Guild, Coventry Triumph Art Society and Coventry Watercolour Society - and most are for sale.

Lord Mayor Cllr Shabbir Ahmed has chosen his favourite work - Sheila Karran's Look, A Fish. The selection panel have also given awards to Arthur Howe's Valletta Market and Cynthia Chandler's View from the Accademia Bridge.

The pictures on show feature many landscapes, local scenes and still lifes, with a few more abstract works included.

Livingston Road Baths by Geoff Bateman makes the Foleshill swimming pool look very inviting, Sri Lankan Children by Sheila Karran captures a lovely giggling innocence and Jane Powell's Caught in the Middle is intriguing.

Some of the artists are also giving demonstrations and holding drop-in workshops to try to encourage more people to start painting. They include a portrait workshop with Susan Moore on Monday, a silk painting workshop with Vicki Aizlewood on Tuesday, a colour workshop with Hansa Dhokia on Wednesday and a watercolour demonstration by Maurice Hatfield on Friday. …
