Winni Zhang and Yu Jian Zheng have always talked about owning a restaurant.
Today, the couple will realize that dream with the grand opening of Jian's China Buffet in St. Charles.
"In their way of thinking, it's an honor to serve people food that they enjoy," said Henry Castle, a friend who is helping promote the couple's restaurant. "Food is supposed to be for happy people and they put their heart and soul into it when they are cooking. It's very important for them that it's excellent."
The couple, who met seven years ago while working together in another restaurant, took over ownership in January of the former Chang Jiang China Buffet, located at 1415 W. Main St. in St. Charles' Valley Shopping Center. Although the restaurant has remained open since the couple took ownership, they are celebrating with a grand opening today.
The buffet has dishes like General Tso's Chicken, Spicy Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Shrimp, and Beef and Broccoli. The buffet also includes sushi, desserts and other dishes. Customers also can order their meals off a menu.
Yu Jian Zheng heads up the kitchen. As a boy in China, Zheng grew up cooking with his father, who also was a chef. He said his father taught him to make sure his customers enjoy the food.
"If you make a dish for the customer, make sure the customer is satisfied and that they are happy," Zheng responded when asked about the advice his father gave him.
Zheng and his wife, both of whom spoke through an interpreter, said they are excited to have their own restaurant and serve customers. …
