Further education management is poor and morale among staff is poor, according to a survey by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers. The survey of members in England and Wales shows that more than 60% thought that the management at their institution was poor or very poor. Only 8% rated it as good.
ATL Cymru spokesman Dr Philip Dixon said, 'Members speak again and again of low morale, bad management, bullying, and authoritarianism.
'A badly managed workforce cannot produce the goods.'
The ATL wants a professional qualification developed for principals and senior managers, similar to the National Professional Qualification for Headship of schools.
It also wants the Welsh Assembly Government to provide a model guidance for formal staff and senior management forums.
Most members answering the survey also said governors of FE institutions were remote, invisible and ineffective.
They want more staff governors and the possibility of colleges being reabsorbed by local education authorities to be investigated.
The survey also found that staff wanted more opportunities for staff development.
And they welcomed the review of further education provision in Wales.
The Independent Review of the Mission and Purpose of Further Education in Wales will look at the needs of learners and providers.
FE staff told the survey they believe they are responsive to the needs of employers but want more links and communication with them. …
