HIS universal charm and smiley, feel-good glow melted the hearts ofchildren and adults alike.
Yet a not-quite-so enchanting take on the festive tale by the makers ofScotlands other national drink has left the creator of The Snowman with abitter aftertaste.
Illustrator Raymond Briggs says the magical character has suffered crassexploitation by Irn-Bru makers AG Barr and others such as Kentucky FriedChicken who have used him in promotions.
Although pocketing a hefty royalty cheque from Cumbernauldbased Barrs, Briggshas now gone on the attacknearly a year after the Irn-Bru pastiche, complete with ginger-hairedschoolboy, was screened.
Briggs, 73, said: It is galling to find that the innocent character one hascreated for young children is being used to promote junk food and drink, andalso to decorate the packing of lavatory paper.
Barrs spent [pounds sterling]250,000 on the 60-second animation showing The Snowman stealing acan of Irn-Bru.
The boy was being flown in the iconic sequence to the North Pole but, afterrefusing to give the Snowman a sip, was dropped from a great height intoGlasgows George Square Barrs obtained a licence to use the original soundtrackfrom the 1982 film. …
