A SINGLE gang of youths terrorising a Scots community committed almost450 crimes in less than a year.
Police chiefs yesterday disclosed the shocking statistic at the launch of acampaign to tackle gang violence.
The group responsible for the crimewave was responsible for 448 offences in theStrathclyde area in only 11 months.
Strathclyde Police chief constable Stephen House said: 'That is 13 crimes pergang member - and that is just the crimes we know about.
'Every one of these crimes has a victim. There are decent people being blightedby these crimes.' Strathclyde alone is home to around 160 gangs, whose membersinclude young women as well as men.
The police campaign to stamp out gang violence is being led by the StrathclydePolice violence reduction unit.
It is the latest phase of the Safer Scotland anti-violence campaign which haspreviously focused on knives and alcohol.
Mr House said that violence by gang members was almost always committed againsta member of a rival gang.
Around 5 per cent of youngsters in Strathclyde are thought to be involved ingang violence or disorder, with up to one in four of all youths at risk ofbeing drawn into the culture.
The clampdown will see extra officers patrolling known trouble hotspots, whilegang members will be stopped and searched.
