Two Charged over Robbery; POLICE INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE INTO SPATE OF ARMED RAIDS

TWO suspects appeared in court in connection with an armed robbery on a Tyneside bookmaker's.

A large quantity of cash was stolen in the raid, on the Coral shop, on Beacon Lough Road, Gateshead.

Two men burst in with a knife and a handgun, terrifying staff at around 9pm last Wednesday.

After an investigation by police, two men were arrested and charged with armed robbery and appeared before magistrates in Gateshead.

Sean Hall, 23, of Linden, Springwell Estate, Gateshead, and Daniel William McDowell, 26, of Beacon Court, Beacon Lough, were remanded in custody and the case was adjourned.

It comes as investigations are on-going into a spate of other armed robberies in the region.

A gang of raiders targeted the upmarket Berrys jewellers in Newcastle City centre.

The raid, not thought to be related to the Gateshead incident, happened in broad daylight, as three men stormed the store.

CCTV cameras caught the trio, one brandishing a gun, who used a claw hammer to smash display cabinets inside the shop.

They then made off with an estimated pounds 130,000 worth of exclusive watches, including Cartier and Patek Philippe. …
