SHE once admitted a fling with Blue Peter co-star Peter Purves. But when Valerie Singleton's other former co-host tried to win her attentions yesterday, she was having none of it.

Perhaps it was the prospect of meeting the Queen that meant she appeared oblivious to 74- year-old John Noakes's attempt to give her a playful kiss.

The trio from Blue Peter's golden age were among a select group of the programme's 34 presenters to attend the show's 50th birthday party at Buckingham Palace yesterday.

The others were Lesley Judd, Simon Groom, Yvette Fielding, Katy Hill, Diane-Louise Jordan, Konnie Huq and Matt Baker.

TP. S And some of those who didn't get an invitation he Queen, said to be a keen viewer and the proud owner of a gold Blue Peter badge, marked the half centenary of the show by inviting the presenters for tea.

Miss Singleton, 71, said: 'I am just so flattered to be asked here. Blue Peter is such a fantastic programme.

It does so many different things. 'It has ideas, it interests children in world affairs. They can contribute, there are pets and, of course, the badges. It is such a special programme.' Mr Purves, 69, added: 'There will always be room for this kind of programme.

It is a good magazine show. It is very well devised and lots of variety in it.' The show has a long history of Royal links: Princess Anne and Prince Charles were both filmed on safari for the show, while Prince Andrew and Prince Edward visited the set as youngsters. Among those not invited to the palace were Richard Bacon - sacked amid allegations of cocaine abuse - and Janet Ellis, who caused a storm by having a child without being married.

There was no place either for John Leslie, whose post Blue Peter television career effectively ended after he was accused of sex assaults. He was later acquitted of all charges. …
