World Heart Day

TODAY is World Heart Day. The celebration is a call to action to help people better understand their personal risk for cardiovascular disease, including hypertension. Leading this year's activities is the World Heart Federation (WHF) in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), other concerned UN agencies, and WHF member-organizations worldwide. Established in 2000 to increase public awareness of the growing threat of heart disease and stroke, World Heart Day has been the most successful annual international campaign against the two major killer diseases that claim around 17.5 million lives yearly with some 80 percent from low- and middle-income countries. By 2025, around 1.5 billion people worldwide or about one out of three adults over the age 25 will have high blood pressure, one of the biggest single risk factors for heart disease and stroke.The WHF is an non-government organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, devoted to the prevention and control of heart disease and stroke. Composed of 196-member societies of cardiology and heart foundations in over 100 countries, WHF was formed in 1978 with the merger of the International Society of Cardiology (ISC), and the International Cardiology Federation (founded in 1970), becoming the International Society and Federation of Cardiology (ISFC). …
