Jessy Rompies of Indonesia and Kang Seo-kyung of South Korea scored impressive wins over their seeded rivals yesterday to barge into the semifinals of the PLDT-Smart ITF Women's Circuit Week 2 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis courts.
Banking on her powerful double-handed backhand shots, Rompies surprised Japanese fourth seed Yumi Nakano, 6-1, 6-2, a feat that assured her of a better finish after making only in the quarterfinal round in Week 1 of the tournament.
The 19-year-old Kang was equally strong and exciting, mixing her shots well en route to posting a 6-4, 6-4 win over Chinese eighth pick Li Ting.
The 18-year-old Rompies, however, will have her hands full in the semis since she will go up against seventh seed compatriot and Week 1 runner up Ayu-fani Damayanti.
Damayante secured a berth in the next stage by downing French qualifier Elodie Rogge-Dietrich, 7-5, 6-4.
