IN APRIL, nearly 8o undocumented workers were arrested in a series of workplace raids in Southern Ontario. In May and June there were two more raids at two different greenhouses in Leamington, Ontario-Refugee claimants, temporary workers, live-in caregivers, migrant workers and non-status people were among those detained.
These raids, conducted by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), are the Largest of their kind in Canadian history. They are part of a shift in Canadian immigration policy under Jason Kenney, Conservative MP and Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism that is increasingly relying on fear and intimidation tactics to target the large number of non-permanent workers in the country.
At the same time these workplace raids are occurring, Kenney and the Conservatives support an increase in tern porary worker intake, which ensures more and more migrants entering Canada are limited to temporary work with low pay, no benefits, poor working conditions, and no political, social, or economic rights.
The Conservative government is publicly committed to increasing the number of immigrants accepted each year; however, immigration rates are actually being selectively reduced, targeting family class immigrants from the Global South. …
