The nation is celebrating today the 124th Birth Anniversary of Jose Abad Santos, the fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and one of the greatest heroes of World War II.Born on February 19, 1886, in San Fernando, Pampanga, Chief Justice Abad Santos who served the Supreme Court from December 24, 1941, to May 7, 1942, was the seventh of ten children of Vicente Abad Santos and the former Toribia Basco.He completed his elementary education in the public schools of Pampanga and was a high school undergraduate when he was sent by the Philippine government in 1904 on a scholarship to pursue his secondary education in Santa Clara, California, in the United States (US). Chief Justice Abad Santos earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1908 and received his Master of Laws degree from George Washington University a year later.Returning home, Chief Justice Abad Santos took and passed the bar examination and started his law practice in 1911. In 1919, the US Supreme Court allowed him to practice law in the US.However, instead of practicing law in the US he came back to the Philippines and was appointed Attorney General and later Secretary of the Department of Justice. …
