Less than a week after it became known that a second high-profile University of Oregon athletic department employee started his job without a contract, the school announced there's a new finance and administration guru in town.
The university has appointed Jamie Moffitt, now the associate dean for finance and operations at the UO School of Law, to a newly created position with a nine-word-long title: executive senior associate athletic director for finance and administration.
Moffitt will direct all aspects of the athletic department's business operations, according to a university press release.
The news comes after university officials discovered that its outgoing and former athletic directors - Mike Bellotti and Pat Kilkenny, respectively - worked for a significant period of time without a signed contract.
But Lorraine Davis, the school's interim director of intercollegiate athletics, said Sunday that she would have made the decision to create Moffitt's position even without those revelations. The athletic department's scope has grown in recent years, Davis said, what with big construction projects such as PK Park (baseball), Matt Court (basketball) and the John Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes; the addition of new sports in baseball and stunts and gymnastics; and a corresponding growth in personnel.
"I felt there needed to be a high-level finance and administration person to coordinate all the functions of budgets, finances, human resources, strategic planning and contracts," Davis said. "It's not as coordinated as it needs to be."
Moffitt's annual salary will be $155,250, as of her May 1 start date. That's a "slight" increase above what she is making at the law school, Davis said, but it's equivalent to salaries paid to the other two executive senior associate athletic directors.
