DA7 Prepares for la Nina

DAUIS, Bohol - As the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) earlier projected a more than 40 percent probability of La Nina to occur in July, the Region 7 office of the Department of Agriculture (DA) has already put in place all precautionary measures to minimize possible damages brought by excessive rainfall that might result to flashflood or even landslide.DA7 regional executive director Ricardo Oblena bared that part of their preparation is the positioning of certified seeds and hybrid crops which will be planted during the rainy season. The department has also expressed readiness in seed distribution in case crops will be badly affected by the heavy rains.However, Oblena said that they are expecting lesser damages this season as farmers are already cautious about the occurrence of La Nina "with our continuing information campaign farmers are now more aware on the things they should do."It can be recalled that the droughts brought by El Nino this year damaged about P33 million crops in the region which badly hit the corn production of the Cebu province which is also attributed to the continuing problem on its watershed protection."The corn production in the northern part of the islands was greatly affected by El Nino during the last five months of the year," he said. …
