IT was not until Bianca Bond nearly died after a head-on collision on the Sunshine Motorway that she understood how important it was to know where she came from.

The Young Citizen of the Year and daughter of Sunshine Coast elder Bev Hand, not knowing if she would survive the night, let alone walk again, at that moment realised that to know what she can be depended on her knowing what had been.

Ms Bond spoke at the launch yesterday of NAIDOC Week, a celebration of indigenous culture and achievement on the Coast.

This year's theme is Unsung heroes: Closing the Gap and Leading the Way.

A number of activities will take place through the week, culminating in a celebration at Cotton Tree Park on Sunday.

Ms Bond works with young Aboriginal people to motivate them to learn about their roots and the struggles their forebears endured to see the culture blossom today.

And she is confident of the future, three years on from former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's historic apology by the nation. …
