Contractors Asked to Follow Gov't Regulations

In pursuit of engineering excellence, the Quezon City Engineering Department (QCED) has warned private contractors to follow strict government regulations in construction to prevent fines, sanctions, and even jail terms.In a meeting with the contractors, City Engineer Joselito Cabungcal, head of the QCED, reminded them to maintain the highest quality of work, cautioning them to "shape up or ship out'' or face the possibility of being blacklisted from the list of contractors bidding for infrastructure projects in Quezon City."I will not hesitate to recommend to Mayor Bautista the blacklisting of non-performing and stubborn contractors who continue to disobey the standards set by the Quezon City government,'' Cabungcal said.Tadeo Palma, secretary of Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista, also cautioned them against using substandard materials which cause the premature wearing and tearing of government projects, putting the lives of the public at risk.He asked the contractors to purchase their construction materials only from reputable hardware stores and material suppliers to avoid jeopardizing the projects of the city government.Palma issued the warning after Cabungcal claimed that errant construction materials suppliers are purposely mislabeling their undersized plywood, wooden planks, steel bars and metal sheets, passing them off as a few sizes or grades higher than their actual size or strengths. …
