Battle Of Britain: The Real Story, 9.30pm, BBC2

OF THE spate of recent programmes related to the 70th anniversary, this is the most incisively analytical. Historian James Holland sets the stirring story of 'the few' in a wider context, with the help of testimony from German veterans (Such as Luftwaffe bomber pilot Hajo Herrmann, pictured), and extraordinary documentary material, including transcripts of recorded conversations between captured German pilots.


Law & Order: UK, 9pm, STV

HOW surprised we were when L&O: UK launched last year and proved our pessimism ill-founded. Deservedly recommissioned, the new series begins with a grim child murder. It may not match the 456 episodes of the US version, but we can enjoy it while it lasts.


Law & Order: Criminal Intent, 10pm, Ch5

THE mesmeric Vincent d'Onofrio as Goren is very much to the fore in a tough, gripping episode in which the maverick detective goes undercover to infiltrate a jail where his vulnerable nephew is being held. He's desperate to save the young man from a brutal prison regime -- but is he putting his career, and even his life, in jeopardy by going undercover? …
