ICRC Conducts Humanitarian Law Workshop

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) conducted a one-day workshop on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and conflict reporting for the media practitioners from all over the region over the weekend.The workshop was aimed at arming media practitioners with knowledge on IHL, provisions that protect media practitioners during conflicts, and when it is applicable.The participants were also informed on the proper reporting of conflict so as to avoid misleading the public on the real score of the situation.Anastasia Isyuk, communications coordinator of ICRC, said they want to create an environment that supports the rule of law, conducive to respect of the International Humanitarian Law."Provisions under the IHL gives protection to civilian population, and this include the media," Isyuk pointed.Isyuk drew the line for media practitioners when these provisions are applicable and when it's not, especially when covering conflicts. She stressed that IHL prohibits and limits certain conduct when covering."These provisions are applicable only in international and internal conflicts. But for internal conflict, we don't intervene if it's a clan war," Isyuk said. …
