November Is Malaria Awareness Month

MANILA, Philippines - November has been declared Malaria Awareness Month, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 1168, to build public awareness on the disease and its prevention and control. Malaria is one of the 10 leading causes of morbidity in the country. It is endemic in 63 provinces affecting 12.5 million Filipinos. Although some provinces have been declared as malaria-free, it has been noted that there are malaria epidemic in some provinces also.Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic infection that is caused by a parasite called plasmodium. It is spread by a bite of an infected female anopheles mosquito which abounds in tropical and swampy areas. Malaria can also spread through blood transfusion, organ transplant, sharing of needles and syringes with an infected person, and transfer of malaria parasites from an infected mother to an unborn child. When an infected mosquito bites a person, the parasites enter the bloodstream and travels to the liver. There the parasites multiply during an incubation period that takes anywhere from eight days to several months. …
