International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

MANILA, Philippines - The United Nations (UN) observes today the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, as mandated by resolutions agreed upon by the UN General Assembly. It was also on this day in 1947 that the General Assembly adopted Resolution 181 which partitioned the Palestinian territory into two states, one Jewish and the other Arab. The resolution recommended the dissolution of the British Mandate for Palestine.International Day of Solidarity is a reminder to international communities and leaders that conflicts surrounding the independence and sovereignty of Palestine have yet to be resolved.This day is annually celebrated in the various UN headquarters which are located in New York City in the United States of America, Geneva in Switzerland, and Vienna in Austria. Special events and activities are held on this day by the Division for Palestinian Rights of the United Nations Secretariat which is in close coordination with the Committee on the Exercise of the inalienable Rights of the Palestinian people. …
