Water: The Exhibition

The most abundant substance on Earth, water covers more than 70 percent of the planet. It is the only natural substance that occurs on Earth in liquid, solid, and gaseous forms. Opening March 5, Water: The Exhibition celebrates the power and wonder of this life-giving substance. In addition to explaining water's unique physical and chemical properties and origins, Water explores the critical role this mineral plays in the natural world. "Fresh water is surprisingly rare--it makes up only 3 percent of the water on the planet," says co-curator Mary Burridge, and yet it supports all life outside the oceans. Multimedia installations, live animals, and more help to illustrate the indispensable role water plays in our lives.

Indian Painted Photographs

Painted photographs are exactly what they sound like: a combination of painting and photography. They are a distinctive genre of Indian visual culture. The ROM brings together approximately 60 images covering the period when production was at its height--the 1880s through the 1940s. These images were precursors to the Bollywood cinema showcards that feature brightly coloured hand-painted photo collages.
