MANILA, Philippines -- Former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada, the 13th President of the Philippines, is celebrating his 74th Birth Anniversary today, April 19, 2011. He served the country for over four decades, in various elective posts - from Mayor to Senator to Vice President and finally President.
Born in Tondo, Manila, to Emilio Ejercito, Sr. and Maria M. Marcelo, President Estrada entered politics in 1967 when he was elected Mayor of San Juan, Metro Manila, where he served for 17 years. In 1987, he was elected to the Senate, where he became Chairman of several committees. His bill on the protection and propagation of carabaos, the national beast of burden, became a landmark legislation. In 1992, he won as Vice President during the administration of President Fidel V. Ramos. As Vice President, he chaired the Presidential Anti-Crime Commission. He was sworn in as President on June 30, 1998 at the historic Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan.
Prior to joining politics, President Estrada was a multi-awarded movie actor. He had appeared in over 100 films and produced some 70 films in a career that spanned 33 years. …
