THE classic summer sound of leather on willow has reverberated around the quaint ground for the last 175 years - with only two World Wars managing to temporarily stop play.

But now one of Scotland's most historic cricket clubs has been bowled out - due to its crumbling pavilion and a chronic lack of players.

Cupar Cricket Club in Fife has decided to pull out of the sport for a year in the hope of finding a solution to its problems.

The club has performed with distinction in the lush surrounds of Duffus Park since 1836 - and was formed officially in 1884.
