Breastfeeding Month

MANILA, Philippines - Recognizing the vital importance of breastfeeding to child survival, Presidential Proclamation No. 1113 has declared the month of August to be celebrated as National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, with the Philippine Lactation Resource and Training Center (PLRTC) as lead agency. The goals are: prevention of the annual deaths of 16,000 Filipino children and 1.5 million children worldwide because of improper feeding; promotion of optimal infant and young child feeding practices and issues that breastfeeding addresses; promotion of indigenous nurturing practices that sustained breastfeeding in the past like consumption of indigenous fruits and vegetables; generation of social support for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by mobilizing all sectors of the society; and developing and increasing social consciousness and responsibility among youth and children. Supplemented by nutritious food, breastfeeding is an important source of nutrients for children. Breast milk protects infants against many childhood diseases on top of providing comfort and warmth to the baby who is held close to the nursing mother. …
