Anna Meares has been named as a contender for the prestigious international Laureus Sportswoman of the Year Award after winning three gold medals at the World Track Cycling Championships in Holland this year.

She joins an impressive line-up of stars, including Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova and British swimming champ Rebecca Adlington, in the running for the award which recognises the best sporting achievement throughout 2011. The winner will be announced in London on February 6.

Last month Anna won the Cycling Australia People's Choice award ahead of Cadel Evans, following her gong as the Australian Institute of Sport athlete of the year.

GOLDEN SMILE: Rockhampton's Anna Meares looks back on some wonderful memories on her return to Kenrick Tucker Velodrome yesterday for the CQUniversity Rockhampton Cup on Wheels.

CYCLING: She's rubbed shoulders with Australian sporting legends, pipped Tour de France winner Cadel Evans for cycling's top gong and even had dinner with the Queen a welcome to the world of Anna Meares.

It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks for the Rockhampton cycling star, who was happy to be back home and in the familiar surroundings of Kenrick Tucker Velodrome when we caught up with the jet-setting Olympic gold medallist yesterday.

Meares, 28, is the official ambassador for the annual CQUniversity Rockhampton Cup on Wheels, which rolled into action last night.

While not racing as she begins the final countdown for next year's London Olympics, Meares can still remember the first time she strolled out on to Kenrick Tucker Velodrome.

aI was brought out here to have a go at the 500 (metres) time trial and I remember someone said to me you get a lot of speed if you come from the top of the bank to the bottom,a she said.

aSo in the time trial I went from bottom of the track to the top to get the speed to come back down and then everyone was like a[approximately]what are you doing',a she laughed. …
