Club Gears Up for Last Meeting

RACING: What could only be described as a successful year of racing comes to a close for the Gladstone Turf Club at Ferguson Park racecourse this afternoon, where a first-class, five-race card is scheduled.

Racing in Gladstone is flying, with club membership and most aspects of the sport and industry on a high.

The only issue in Gladstone is the lack of jockeys and track work riders residing in the Harbour City, but this is part of a national crisis involving country racing centres.

Testimony to the popularity of Ferguson Park as a racing venue for all facets of the racing industry, from a professional level to an entertainment perspective, is the fact that 45 horses are set to race this afternoon.

The horses are coming from Mackay, Rockhampton, Bluff, Bundaberg, and Monto, as well as a strong contingent from the home track.

The jockeys are arriving from even further a field, with Leanne Henry and Kelly Gates travelling from the Sunshine Coast and Desiree Gill heading to Ferguson Park from Gympie. …
